Ingredients & How Our Food Is Made

What is in FoodNerds Seed Blend?

The FoodNerd Seed Blend is a special mix of sprouted flax seeds, broccoli seeds, chia seeds, and pumpkin seeds, carefully chosen for their unique macronutrient qualities and essential vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.

We've included:

  • Flax seeds for their abundance of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Broccoli seeds for their sulforaphane content, a powerful antioxidant that can support the immune system.
  • Chia seeds for their fiber content, which can support the digestive system.
  • Pumpkin seeds for their magnesium content, a micronutrient that can support the immune system.

Together, these seeds form a nutritious blend that not only tastes great but also provides a diverse range of health benefits.

What are sprouted seeds?

Sprouts are the young, tender shoots that emerge from the seeds of plants during their initial growth. Sprouts are packed with a rich concentration of phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. If you’d like to hear more about sprouting, watch this video by our founder and CEO, Sharon!

Why use seeds instead of grains in your Puffs?

Other children’s puffs use some sort of grain base, at FoodNerd, we use sprouted seeds instead. These seeds outshine grains in the quality and quantity of nutrients and improve the puff’s digestibility. Sprouted seeds’ nutrient quality can exceed that of extruded grains by up to 90%, meaning every bite your kiddo takes is tasty and packs a nutritious punch.

What are the health benefits of broccoli sprouts?

Discover the nutrient-packed wonders of broccoli sprouts, also known as sprouted broccoli seeds, conveniently concentrated for a powerful punch of goodness. Renowned for their antioxidant capabilities, these superfoods contain the extraordinary phytonutrient sulforaphane. Extensively studied at Johns Hopkins University by Dr. Jed Fahey, sulforaphane showcases remarkable benefits. This special compound contributes to detoxification, exerts anti-inflammatory effects, and fortifies the body's natural defense mechanisms against oxidative stress.

You and your little one can take advantage of the power of broccoli sprouts in all our FoodNerd products.

What is sulforaphane?

Sulforaphane is a powerful phytonutrient and antioxidant compound found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. Sulforaphane has been extensively studied for its potential health benefits, including its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

What is Nutrient Lock Cold Processing?

FoodNerd's Nutrient Lock Cold Processing revolutionizes the preservation of our mega food products, starting with the sprouting of fresh organic seeds to unleash their nutritional potential. We combine these nutrient-rich sprouted seeds with fresh organic fruits and vegetables. Utilizing our patent-pending cold technology and gentle freeze-drying process, we carefully remove water without subjecting our products to high heat or excessive processing. This results in a shelf-stable food that contains natural vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients!

What is bioavailability?

Bioavailability refers to how easily and efficiently the body absorbs and uses nutrients. When a nutrient has high bioavailability, it means the body can easily take it in and use it effectively.

What are refined ingredients and why are they bad?

Refined foods undergo significant changes from their original source, primarily for the sake of shelf stability and convenience. During this process, crucial nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber are often stripped away. Once the nutritious elements are lost, ingredients like sugars and saturated fats are reintroduced to enhance taste and extend shelf life. Refined foods typically prioritize a select few ingredients, emphasizing calorie-rich components while neglecting a diverse nutritional profile. Despite their popularity for delivering consistent taste and prolonged shelf stability, refined ingredients may compromise the overall health benefits found in less processed alternatives

FoodNerd superstars, what are they, and why are they important?

Apple, avocado, banana, beets, bell pepper, currant, dates, grapes, lemon, moringa leaf, pineapple, spirulina, sprouted broccoli seed, sprouted chia seed, sprouted flax seed, sprouted hemp seeds, sprouted pumpkin seed, turmeric, and wild blueberries. We use diverse fruits and vegetables to expand the foods your little ones are exposed to. Introducing a variety of fruit and vegetables early is essential for a healthy gut and palate development.

How do I use FoodNerd’s Organic Broccoli Sprout Powder?

Our Broccoli Sprout Powder is naturally bitter! You can add it to smoothies or juice (pineapple and lime works best!) to mask the flavor. Another option is to add on top of salads for a natural zing. Or, our favorite, mix with water and take as an immune boosting shot!

Child Nutrition & Development

How much fat, protein, carbs, and fiber does my toddler need?

The recommended daily intake for toddlers aged 1-3 years is as follows, based on a 1000-calorie diet:

  • Fat: Between 30-40 grams*
  • Protein: 13 grams
  • Carbohydrates: 130 grams*
  • Fiber: 19 grams

*Please note that individual dietary needs can vary based on a child's size and specific health requirements. It's recommended to consult with your pediatrician to determine the most suitable dietary pattern for your child.

**Daily values can be referenced in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, Appendix 3

What are the first 1000 days of life?

The first 1000 days of life refers to the critical period of your baby’s life, from conception through their second birthday! During this window of time your baby experiences remarkable developmental growth. During this time, your child's brain undergoes rapid growth, and the beginning of their lifelong health trajectories is established. Adequate nutrition, responsive caregiving, and a nurturing environment during these 1000 days play a pivotal role in shaping a child's cognitive, emotional, and physical well-being, laying the foundation for a healthy and thriving future.

Why is Palate Development important?

Palate development directly influences a child’s sensory experiences with food and can help establish healthy lifelong eating habits. Shaping the palate during early childhood impacts taste preferences, texture acceptance, and the willingness to try diverse foods. By exposing your little one to a variety of flavors and textures during this developmental stage, parents help their little on develop a well-rounded palate, promoting a healthy relationship with food and supporting a balanced and nutritious diet throughout their lives.

Can you prevent picky eating?

While you can’t prevent picky eating, you can help your little one develop a love for new foods. Introducing a variety of flavors and textures, including those found in the FoodNerd Mega Puffs Seed blend and SuperFoods, can set the stage for the long-term enjoyment of diverse and healthy foods. At FoodNerd, we understand the importance of exposing children to a range of flavor profiles at developmentally appropriate stages. Our products incorporate tastes that align with the development of baby's palate for sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami flavors. By incorporating these diverse flavors, we aim to help your little one become more accepting of various tastes and kinds of foods, fostering a positive relationship with nutrition from the start.

Why does plant diversity matter?

Similar to preventing picky eating, incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables into your little one’s diet plays a crucial role in building a healthy immune system, fostering a well-balanced gut, and promoting strong bodies for optimal growth. FoodNerd simplifies the process by offering a convenient way to expand their diet, seamlessly incorporating diverse foods like sprouted broccoli seeds, moringa leaves, currants, and so many into one pack.

How does FoodNerd help nurture my child's gut health?

At FoodNerd, we take pride in fostering your child's well-being by offering products designed to build and sustain a healthy gut. Our unique blend of diverse fruits and vegetables ensures your little one gets a wide range of nutrients and essential prebiotics—those special non-digestible fibers that act as super fuel for the good bacteria in their tummy. This diverse team of friendly bacteria is more than just a digestive crew; they play a vital role in digestion and nutrient absorption. But the perks don't stop there! A robust gut foundation goes beyond digestion; it can shield against digestive disorders, boost immunity, and may even help reduce inflammation. With FoodNerd, you're not just nourishing your child's taste buds; you're laying the groundwork for a strong and resilient gut that supports their overall health and well-being.

What are serving sizes (fruit and veg) for 1-3 year olds?

Your little one should be eating at least 1-1.5 cups of fruit and 1-1.5 cups of vegetables, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. FoodNerd Puffs were formulated to give your kiddle 100% of both fruit and veg in one simple pack!

*Please note that individual dietary needs can vary based on a child's size and specific health requirements. It's recommended to consult with your pediatrician to determine the most suitable dietary pattern for your child.

*Serving sizes can be referenced in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, Appendix 3

At what age can my little one start eating FoodNerd Puffs?

While each baby follows their own timeline, the typical readiness signs usually emerge around 10-12 months, though some may venture into this phase earlier or a bit later.

  • Interest in Solids: Keep a watchful eye for signs that your baby is showing curiosity in solid foods. This might look like – interest during family meals, a pro at navigating purees or soft solids, active engagement in Baby-Led Weaning practices.
  • Strong Pincer Grasp: Progress in fine motor skills is marked by your baby's ability to grasp small objects between thumb and forefinger. An established pincer grasp is a positive signal that they are ready for the independence of self-feeding.
  • Independent Sitting with a Stable Head: A crucial physical milestone is achieved when your baby can sit independently with a stable head. This achievement signifies the strength and control necessary for safe and enjoyable eating experiences.

Guidelines for Introducing Puffs: As these snacks are known for their delectable taste, your little one may want to devour many at once. Therefore, we suggest a cautious approach with newer eaters, starting with one puff at a time and/or breaking their convenient heart shape in half for a manageable and enjoyable introduction to solid snacks.

At FoodNerd, we're on a mission to redefine what kids eat today, tomorrow, and in the future. We make a wide range of tasty foods, but underneath all that deliciousness, we’re also setting new standards for nutrient density. We believe that parents should never have to compromise their children's well-being because of busy schedules or a lack of great pre-packaged options. That's why we've dedicated ourselves to creating nibbles that are positively brimming with the goodness of nature’s best ingredients.

Our secret? Through meticulous research and development, we've harnessed a groundbreaking method (we call it Nutrient Lock Cold Processing) that preserves the natural vitality of fruits, vegetables, and sprouted seeds, ensuring that up to 98% of the nutrients remain intact. This also means that we don’t need to add any “filler” ingredients that cancel out the benefits of the best nutrients. We think it’s pretty remarkable science, but the most exciting bit goes beyond the nutritional excellence — our favorite part is that our kids love to eat something that’s so good for their future selves.

Our products are designed to seamlessly fit into the ups and downs of parenthood. Whether it's snack time on the go, or dinner time where you’re like “where did the day go?” our healthy creations are there to support you. At FoodNerd, we believe that the healthy growth and development of our kids should go hand in hand with scientific rigor, tasty delight, and the kind of love for little ones that would make one stop at nothing in the pursuit to revolutionize how food gets made for the next generation.
